Historic Copper Roof Restoration

Project Summary
This project required the removal of this historic landmark’s existing sloped commercial copper roofing system and:

• The design and installation of a new one.
• A design that entailed determining the optimal size and width of the new copper panels for the most cost effective installation.

Project Description
Built in an eye-catching Gothic style, the Unitarian Memorial Church of New Bedford, Massachusetts is a building not to be missed. It has a stunning tower, buttresses on the side walls and a richness of detail in its construction.

One of the parts of the church vision statement from the Unitarian Church in New Bedford is to “respectfully preserve the architectural gifts of our benefactor, Henry Huttleston Rogers”, and proper replacement of the old commercial roofing system was an important step to maintaining this vision.

As part of the copper roof restoration project for this landmark church, some technical difficulties had to be overcome. The existing roof was sloped making measuring and installing the new commercial roofing system more difficult.  Flagship carefully determined the optimal length and width of the new copper panels to provide historic accuracy at the most cost-effective price.

Once the initial planning and pre-construction was complete, the older copper commercial roofing system was completely removed, and then the new commercial roofing copper panels were fitted.
