Project Summary
Custom Metal Façade Fabrication and Installation

  • Flagship duplicated the existing front metal copper façade of this building,
  • Flagship removed the existing metal and fabricated and installed copper stepped window moldings and raised columns and arches separating the building’s windows.

Project Description
This 10,000 square foot commercial office building, 156 State Street, Boston, is located in the heart of the Boston’s financial district. Its front facade is unique in that it has intricate copper work surrounding and separating the windows.

Flagship, a commercial roofing contractor with a specialty in custom metal fabrication, was selected to recreate and maintain the original look of the building by renovating the building’s exterior. This involved a large amount of planning and custom copper fabrication to prepare for the installation. Although there are several modern alternatives to copper, the design of 156 State Street meant that only copper would be suitable, and this required significant expertise in working with copper.

The first phase of the renovation involved removing the old and damaged copper facade and correcting any underlying damaged sections. Then the new copper was installed, including the moldings, around the smaller window areas and across the arches which separate each of the high windows on the top floor of the building. Each of the two columns within the window grouping, running from the bottom to the top of the office building, were also re-encased in copper – six columns in total.

One finishing touch, to improve upon the original design, was the inclusion of custom-made flower boxes on the first floor windows, giving a more “natural” feel to the finished project.
