TitleistThe Bullard House

New Bedford, Mass.
Historic Roofing System Restoration

Project Summary
Commercial roofing contractor Flagship removed this National Historic Landmark’s decaying red cedar roofing system and replaced with a historically correct new red cedar roofing system complete with ornamental copper matching the building’s historical period.

Project Description
When it comes to the restoration of a period building, the exterior is the most important part to “get right”. People know what a building looks like from the many times they pass by it. In the case of The Bullard House in New Bedford, Massachusetts this was true because it had an old red cedar roof which was very distinctive. The roof was a major part of the character of this historic landmark.Flagship Roofing and Sheet Metal Co., Inc., a commercial roofing contractor, was called in to remove and replace the old red cedar roofing, which had become decayed over the years. This had to be done in keeping with the building’s historical period.

Although there are many modern commercial roofing materials, which look very good and have great cost-lifetime benefits, for this particular building it was a case of “back to basics”, so a new red cedar roof was installed. This ensured that the building was historically correct..

Over the years, some of The Bullard House’s ornamental copper had become damaged. Flagship also replaced these fixtures, paying particular attention to detail to ensure that these were historically perfect.

The result was a modern commercial roofing system using traditional materials to match the historical period of this landmark building.
